Bungalow Enhancement

Project type

Whole House Remodel and Addition

Date

2006 - 2009

Location

Hillsborough, NC

Built in the 1940's, this simplified brick bungalow had been remodeled in the past to serve the needs of a growing family. With the kids now on their own, the owners sought to adjust the home to better match their empty-nester lifestyle. At the same time, they wished to enhance the quality and detailing of the construction so it would be more in keeping with the character of a Craftsman home design. On a day-to-day basis, they desired a visual connection from the Kitchen through to the street and neighborhood. At times, it would also be desirable to close the Kitchen off from the Dining Room in varying degrees, depending upon the type of entertaining and the number of people in attendance. The wall separating the Kitchen from Dining was removed and a set of sliding, etched glass doors introduced to allow the degree of openness to be modulated to match the situation. The roof line of an earlier Family Room addition has been extended into the back yard to create a Screened Porch in place of a former deck. The previous screened breezeway has been enclosed to create a Laundry and a Daily Entry Foyer for the owners. Remodeling by Krichco Construction.
