Home Remodel and Addition

Date

2005 - 2006

Location

Chapel Hill, NC

The remodel and expansion of this contemporary home design involved refreshing and upgrading the interiors, along with the addition of a Day Room and a Home Office. Guest arrival at the main entry was quite informal in the original context of the home and the owners sought a more gracious and welcoming arrival sequence. A porch was introduced to provide shelter and scale, and a new stair form was created to establish a welcoming feeling. Previously, the garage was a one-story, free-standing structure and the owners were required to walk across a gravel driveway to the main entry to gain access to the home. The roof of the garage was raised to create a second level and the space between it and the home was filled in with an interior stair, a new laundry room and a daily entry area. An interior space with no access to daylight, the master bath was brightened with a solar tube and new lighting. Previously, the master bedroom had a bank of tall, narrow casement windows overlooking the private back yard. The windows were replaced with a large sliding glass door and a screened porch was added to provide a bug-free space to relax outside. The screened porch is also accessible from the family room. The central hall was a dark, narrow, cave-like space even during the day. A small un-used closet was removed to extend the wider portion of the hall. At the point where the hall narrows, the ceiling was removed and the sides of the roof trusses covered with drywall. The resulting boxes were fitted with lights and frosted glass lenses to brighten the space considerably. Remodel by Krichco Construction
