Gambrel in a Garden

Project type

Whole House Remodel and Addition

Date

2004 - 2005

Location

Durham, NC

This custom home design sits on a property prized for its beautiful camellia and azalea gardens, mature trees and walking-distance proximity to the local university. The original home was designed by William Van Eaton Sprinkle and constructed in the 1940’s. While having been well cared for, it was in need of updating to suit the needs of a young family.

The original shed dormer form of the upper level of the home ended with small gable-topped windows, while one of the two kitchen windows was beneath the main entry porch. The house has been remodeled to take full advantage of a new terrace added across the entry façade by allowing the “front rooms” of the house to spill out via broad French doors. Broad ranks of windows have also been added to the upper level rooms. The storybook cottage scroll work of the screened door and porch columns have been replaced in favor of a more refined and substantial proportioning offered by square Tuscan columns and a full glass door. As part of the Kitchen remodel a large opening was created to join the Kitchen with the adjacent Dining area. In perhaps the most dramatic transformation of the house, a new 6 foot deep window bay was added to the formerly narrow and long Living/Dining Area. Remodel by L.E .Meyers Builders.
