Hillside Home (unbuilt)
Project type
Custom Home Design
Date
2010 - unbuilt
Location
Chapel Hill, NC
This custom home design has been created for a steep hillside lot sloping down from the street. The client desired an accessible home with a level outdoor living space. Rather than grade the site extensively, the driveway enters the site from the lowest point near the street and traverses roughly parallel to the street until it has dropped as far as possible before expanding to become a motor court for 3 guests and necessary maneuvering in and out of the garage. It can double as a play space for children. From that point, the house is designed as a long bar shape that is parallel to the grade. A large courtyard is established one level below the motor court and a bridge provides accessible access for guests to the main, center level, of the home. One long side of the home, facing the street, looks out over the courtyard from a two-level cloister that provides shelter and shade along the length of the house. The site is left largely untouched except for the footprint of the foundation and the 10 to 12 foot wide band of space around the foundation walls necessary for maneuvering construction equipment.
