Whole House Remodel
Date
2010-2012
Location

This existing contemporary home design was constructed on one of the highest hills in a three-county region. It enjoys 270 degree long-distance views that result in the feeling more of being in the mountains than in the Piedmont area. My client sought to revise the floor plan of the home to locate primary public spaces and the Primary Bedroom Suite to take maximum advantage of the views. At the same time, a modern farmhouse design, with wrap-around porches and outdoor living spaces was introduced to resonate with the owner's memories of growing up in similar style homes. Finally, the split-entry design of the original home has been revised to provide a more gracious entry process.
The original clerestory form on the roof was removed and the shingles replaced with metal to align the home with the farmhouse vernacular. All windows were replaced with high-efficiency units that further enhance the local farm house vernacular.
On the back, south side of the home, the wrap-around porches swell out at each corner to become screened in porches. Bridging between the two south-facing screened porches is an open porch area that provides shading to the new Formal Dining Area. The west end of the home overlooks the most dramatic and longest view across several counties. To take maximum advantage of this view and still provide appropriate shading from the intense summer sun, the new wrap-around porch extends outward well beyond the window wall. The drama of the well-proportioned glazing extends the Great Room out toward the view and creates a perfect place to view the colorful sunsets that occur on so many afternoons.
