Low Country Re-do
Project type
Whole House Remodel
Date
2003 - 2004
Location
Chapel Hill, NC
The original traditional home design was created by William E. Poole with an eye toward the style and grace of many low country houses. However, the plan arrangement and some of the detailing had become dated and were not conducive to the lifestyle and tastes of the new owners. While the majority of the remodeling took place on the interiors and the rear of the home, the front of the home was also refined. One can see in these images how the window muntin patterns were simplified, the massive stucco skirt bounding the entry stairs was reduced to a more appropriate scale and the heavy wood handrails were replaced with a more delicate cast iron.
The variety of window styles (rectangular, semi-Palladian, arched, and transomed) were simplified to a single style and enlarged to take advantage of the fine views through a thin veil of trees toward the golf course. The semi-palladian window of the kitchen was removed and the kitchen enlarged. The resulting bump-out was integrated into a new dining porch opening off of the formal dining area. Previously, the Living Room and Dining Room were separate, chambered spaces with heavy, Federalist-style trim work. The two spaces were combined into an open, flowing space with new glass doors leading to a new dining porch. Soffits and lighting were introduced to establish proper scale and a sense of calm and organization to the space. Construction by LE Meyers Builders.
