Date

2005 - 2006

This Mid-Century Modern home design by Harwell Hamilton Harris had been purchased by a couple with a great appreciation for the beauty of the natural redwood finishes throughout and the strong indoor/outdoor connections of the living spaces to the courtyard through extensive walls of glass. The original Kitchen was intact but the design was very specific to the original owners and not conducive to today's use. They desired to remodel the Kitchen and update some flooring in a manner that honored the original architecture. Important was to re-envision the Kitchen with an eye toward what Harris might have done if designing for them. The solution involves the use of clear finishes on wood, natural stone counters, providing an informal eating counter/island, and retaining the visual separation of Kitchen to Dining Area while opening the two across the vaulted ceiling. This ceiling level connection reinforces the beauty of the framing system Harris developed for the home. He also employed etched glass "light soffits" throughout the home. Those in the Kitchen area were retained, including the skylights, and the idea extended by creating an etched glass pantry/dinnerware cabinet between the Kitchen and Dining Area. Built in lighting within and above the Pantry provides a delightful and contemporary glow to the space that further elevates the original character of the home.
