Deck House Remodel

Project type

Whole Home Remodel

Date

2007 - 2011

Location

Durham, NC

This Mid-century Modern home design was initially constructed from a Deck Home design. From the 60's through the 80's Deck House provided a prefabricated building system utilizing structural cedar decking for floors and ceilings spanning from beam to beam, with large areas of mahogany-framed windows. The owners purchased the home with an eye for a whole house remodel and enhancement of the outdoor living areas.

The stock plan from which the home was originally constructed required a long walk from the driveway across the majority of the front of the house to get to the Entry Foyer. The original Living, Dining and Kitchen areas were also mostly separate from one another. The interior layout was reconfigured to provide a new Entry Foyer on the approach end of the home. This afforded the opportunity to create a Daily Entry with a drop-zone, a Laundry and a Half-bath for the Family between the Garage and the Entry Foyer. Walls and an unfortunately-located fireplace were removed from the main public spaces to establish a Great Room arrangement connected to walls of glass overlooking the private backyard. A new Screened Porch and hardscaping completes the indoor-outdoor relationships. Lastly, the bedroom suites were updated and an additional bathroom was added. Remodeled by Krichco Construction.
